ألفها الموسيقار الإيطالي (روسيني)
القصة مأخوذة من مسرحية بنفس الإسم من تأليف الشاعر (فردريك شيللر)
تعتبر من آخر ما ألف (روسيني) من الأوبرات بالرغم من استمرار حياته
لمدة أربعين سنة بعد تلك الأوبرا
تم عرضها لأول مرة في باريس في أغسطس 1829
مدة الأوبرا كاملة بالتقريب 4 ساعات من الموسيقى والألحان
وتعتبر اختبارا صعباً للمغني بطبقة التينور

تفاصيل القصة:
المكان: سويسرا (المحتلة)
الزمن: القرن ال13
أحداث الأوبرا:
يقابل (أرنولد) حبيبته (ماتيلدا) ويبوح لها بسر مقتل أبيه بيد أبيها (جسلر).
فلا يكون من أرنولد الا ان ينضم الى الثورة مصرّحا لماتيلدا بأن الوطن، عنده، أهم من الحب. وفي الوقت نفسه يصل رامي السهام الشهير ويليام تل وابنه جيمي. وما ان يظهرا حتى يتكالب الجمع من حولهما اذ يعتقد انهما من الثائرين ويساقا الى مقام غيسلر الذي يعد ويليام تل بأن يعفو عنه ان هو وضع تفاحة فوق رأس ابنه جيمي وأصابها بالسهم. يتردد الأب، لكن ابنه يشجعه، ويصيب ويليام التفاحة بالفعل. ولكن في تلك اللحظة وإذ يستعد غيسلر للعفو عنه، يسقط سهم آخر من بين ثياب ويليام، وحين يسأله غيسلر عن الغاية منه يقول له وقد طفح الكيل: «كنت سأرميك به لو قتل السهم الآخر ابني». وعلى الفور يقبض غيسلر على ويليام تل، بينما تأخذ ماتيلدا الفتى جيمي تحت حمايتها. ولكن الأمور سرعان ما تنقلب على غيسلر، حين يروح أرنولد مجمّعاً الثوار الفلاحين في منطقة البحيرات، وقد قرروا ان يشنوا هجوما ساحقا على قلعة السيد، في وقت كان هذا على متن مركب يأخذه الى القلعة وفي رفقته اسيره ويليام تل. وفجأة تهب عاصفة عاتية يكاد المركب معها يغرق، فلا يكون من ويليام تل الا ان يمسك بالدفة منقذا المركب وركابه من الغرق. ويتمكن من ايصال المركب الى صخرة يتوقف عندها. وفي اللحظة نفسها يأخذ ويليام سهما ويردي به گيسلر قتيلا. ويعم الحماس الشعب الذي يحيط بويليام تل مادحا بطولته، في الوقت الذي تأتي فيه الأخبار مؤكدة ان الثوار قد استولوا على القلعة وان سويسرا قد تحررت من المحتلين.
تعتبر أوبرا «ويليام تل» أفضل عمل كتبه روسيني في مجال الأوبرا الدرامية، كما تعتبر اوبرا «حلاق اشبيليا» أفضل ما كتب في مجال الأوبرا الهزلية. ولكن، لئن كان روسيني، بعد النجاح الكبير الذي حققته هذه الأخيرة، قد استشاط حماسا وانكب على المزيد من الكتابة للأوبرا، فإنه بعد «ويليام تل» صمت تماما عن كتابة الأوبرا، وظل صامتا عنها حتى رحيله في العام 1868، أي طوال نحو أربعين سنة، إذ ان «ويليام تل» قدمت للمرة الأولى في صيف العام 1829، فور انتهاء روسيني من كتابتها. ولكن لماذا صمت روسيني من بعدها؟ سؤال ظل على الدوام من دون اجابة، خصوصا وان روسيني كان حين ألف هذه الأوبرا الأخيرة، لا يزال في السابعة والثلاثين من عمره، وهو وضع العدد الأكبر والأهم من أعماله الأوبرالية، خصوصا، خلال ذلك القسم الأول من حياته، مفضّلا في القسم الثاني ان يعتزل في الدارة التي اشتراها لنفسه في منطقة باسي الفرنسية الراقية، مخلدا الى هدوء وكسل غريبين، سرعان ما اصبحا اسطوريين. والغريب انه حين رحل عن عالمنا في العام 1868 خلف ثروة طائلة نادرا ما قيض لموسيقي في زمنه ان يخلف مثلها.
