القصة مأخوذة من مسرحية بنفس الإسم من تأليف الشاعر (فردريك شيللر)
تعتبر من آخر ما ألف (روسيني) من الأوبرات بالرغم من استمرار حياته
لمدة أربعين سنة بعد تلك الأوبرا
تم عرضها لأول مرة في باريس في أغسطس 1829
مدة الأوبرا كاملة بالتقريب 4 ساعات من الموسيقى والألحان
وتعتبر اختبارا صعباً للمغني بطبقة التينور

تفاصيل القصة:
المكان: سويسرا (المحتلة)
الزمن: القرن ال13
أحداث الفصل الثاني:
تفتح الستار على أطفال يلعبون على هيئة مقاتلين
يتجولون وهم يسمعون بوق النداء للعودة إلى بيوتهم
تظهر (ماتيلدا) وهي على وعد سري للقاء (أرنولد)
يعترف الأخير بحبه لماتيلدا التي تبادله الحب
وتقنعه بالعدول عن الرحيل ليلتحق بالجيش الألماني
بقيادة أبيها (جيسلر)
يلحق (ويليم تل) بـ(أرنولد) وقد كان يراقب مقابلته مع (ماتيلدا)
ويقوم بتوبيخه للرضوخ لها والالتحاق بصفوف جيش الأعداء للقتال في صفوفهم
بدلاً من الذود عن وطنه في قتال الطغاه.
يضطر (ويليم) لإخبار (أرنولد) بحقيقة مقتل أبيه على يد (جيسلر)
وأن (ماتيلدا) تعتبر عدوة له كونها ابنة قاتل أبيه
يتحول (أرنولد) من مقاتل في صفوف أعدائه، إلى مقاتل مع أبناء جلدته من السويسريين
كي ينتقم من قاتل أبيه.
ويتجمع الناس من مختلف القرى للانضمام إلى جيش (ويليم)
البسيط الغير مجهز إلا بالأسلحة البسيطة .
ويعقدوا بينهم عهداً للقتال حتى آخر رمق.
وينتهي الفصل عند ذلك العهد
