In nineteenth century Paris, on the Boulevard du Crime, (known today as the Boulevard du Temple), famous for its theatres and gory plays, two young artists, Baptiste Deburau et Frédérick Lemaître, fight for the love of Garance, a radiant woman who is betrothed to a count.
